Lipoedema is a chronic condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of fat, typically in the legs, thighs, buttocks, and sometimes arms. It mainly affects women and is often mistaken for obesity or lymphedema. Lipoedema can cause pain, tenderness, easy bruising, and a disproportionate body shape (e.g., a smaller upper body with larger lower limbs).

Physiotherapists trained in decongestive lymphatic therapy can help manage the symptoms associated with lipoedema.

How Can Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) Help?

Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy (DLT) is a treatment approach that can help manage the symptoms of lipoedema, even though it does not eliminate the fat deposits. DLT consists of several components:

  1. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) – A specialized gentle massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system, helping to reduce swelling and promote lymph flow.

  2. Compression Therapy – Using compression garments or bandages can help reduce fluid buildup, support the tissues, and alleviate pain or discomfort.

  3. Exercise & Movement Therapy – Low-impact activities like swimming, walking, and rebounding (mini-trampoline) help improve lymphatic flow while reducing pain.

  4. Skin Care & Nutrition – Proper skin hygiene and healthy dietary choices can help manage symptoms and prevent complications like infections.

  5. Self-Care & Lifestyle Adjustments – Learning self-massage, using compression garments consistently, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can improve overall well-being.

While DLT does not cure lipoedema, it can provide symptom relief, improve mobility, and enhance quality of life. In more advanced cases, other treatments like liposuction (specifically for lipoedema) may be considered.
